Some of the most common occupations for American women in 2015 included elementary and middle school teachers, registered nurses, secretaries and admin assistants, customer service reps, accountants and auditors, and cashiers, but women are accessing careers in scientific and technical fields and excelling.
According to the Women's Bureau, female-dominated occupations have been found to pay less than male-dominated occupations with the same skill levels, and women have relatively low shares of employment in high-paying jobs such as those in transportation, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.
But as the number of employers that have more than 20% women at the senior level increase, more STEM employers are helping women prepare for, advance in, and retain non-traditional, high-growth, and higher-paying jobs.
