Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) is one of the oldest gas and electric companies in America. For nearly 200 years, BGE has been meeting the energy needs of central Maryland residents and businesses.
Headquartered in Baltimore, BGE provides service to 1.2 million electric customers and 650,000 natural gas customers. BGE's electric service territory is approximately 2,300 square miles, and its gas service territory is about 800 square miles.
Larry Laws leads a team of 11 engineers and technical specialists in BGE's Transmission and Substation Engineering department. The team is responsible for infrastructure protection, electric distribution, and transmission circuit event analysis.
As supervisor of relay and control for BGE, Laws' job involved managing a unit that was responsible for installation, maintenance, and repair of protective relaying schemes, metering, and remote control and data systems in substations. He also took part in planning substations or plant construction, reviewed engineering drawings and recommended changes when appropriate.
Laws led field training for the entire job family of Relay and Control Technicians. He ensured qualified personnel met requirements by coordinating training with the Safety & Training Unit.
Since he was involved in recruiting, he used the opportunity to reach out to students in Baltimore high schools and colleges and inform them about career opportunities in electrical technology or electrical engineering at BGE. Laws earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Capital College.
He began his career in the power industry after completing a five-year enlistment in the U.S. Army as an electronics devices repairman. At Northrop Grumman Corp., he worked as a special electronics devices repairman in the field engineering services division. The division employed electrical engineers, who worked on nuclear power control systems, submarines and Navy aircraft carriers. Laws designed power measurement solutions for manufacturing and utility companies.
Currently, he is currently working on a Master's in Business Administration from Loyola University. Laws is the 2016 Most Promising Engineer BEYA winner.
