As some of the largest school districts in the country close in response to the national emergency, many colleges are moving to keep students connected online. In a memo to the Prairie View A&M University community, President Ruth Simmons encouraged students to use Zoom, WebEx, and other online delivery for electronic courses.
Online degrees and certificates have always been on offer at colleges and universities. But in the wake of the rapidly spreading coronavirus disease, a new spotlight has been put on virtual classes and digital learning. We took a look at what ABET-accredited historically black colleges and universities are doing as they roll out instructional technology across the board.
Tennessee State University Online/Hybrid Degree Programs has at least 20 programs. But beginning today, TSU will transition to online classes because of health and safety-related issues attributable to the coronavirus (COVID-19).
After Hampton University canceled all in-person classes from March 13 through April 3, the college announced that remote instruction will begin March 17. Hampton's Blackboard e-learning system will help to make learning more effective beyond classroom walls.
Alabama A&M University's Online courses and programs are taught by the same faculty teaching on campus.
Although the campus remains open, Florida A&M University will conduct classes online and by other non-face-to-face instructional methods for at least two weeks following Spring Break (March 16 – 20). From Monday, March 23 through Saturday, April 4 classes will be taught using online or other alternative instructional methods.
Howard University will also shift courses online and remote instruction following Spring Break from March 23 through April 6, 2020. Read the full announcement here.
Virginia State University faculty are currently converting classes to an off campus format. Effective Monday, March 23, Virginia State University will convert to all remote instruction (online/distance education) classes for the remainder of the Spring 2020 academic year.
Norfolk State University is extending Spring Break for students through March 22, when university residence halls are expected to reopen to students. However, classes will be delivered online beginning Monday, March 23 and will continue to be delivered online through April 6.
As of March 11, Morgan State University officially canceled university classes. On March 23, classes will resume remotely and all course instruction will be online using Canvas for a span of two weeks, until at least April 3.
On Twitter, the official feed of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore said Comcast announced Thursday it will be increasing speeds for the Internet Essentials program, and making the program free to customers for two months, amid the coronavirus outbreak.
