On June 19, 1865, Emancipation was celebrated for the first time, two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. According to Urban Intellectuals, since then, Juneteenth has been observed in various ways. In 1979, it was made an official holiday in Texas; and since then many other states followed suit.
