Retired Navy Adm. Michelle Howard, who received recognition for her service and accomplishments during a recent BEYA Stars and Stripes Dinner in Washington, D.C., has been appointed to President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team to the Department of Defense.
In the photo above, Howard is seen speaking at the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Engineering Dean Breakfast, which takes place during the BEYA STEM Conference weekend.
Hosted by US Black Engineer and Information Technology magazine, the Council of HBCU Engineering Deans, and Lockheed Martin Corporation, the 30th annual BEYA STEM Conference took place at the Philadelphia Marriott in February 2016.
Howard was the first African-American woman to command a Navy ship and be promoted to vice admiral. Upon her selection as vice chief of naval operations, she became the first African-American woman to serve as an admiral.
Howard was recognized during the BEYA Stars and Stripes Dinner for her trailblazing accomplishments in the Navy. More recently, the retired admiral was appointed to IBM Corporation’s board, effective March 1, 2019.
In the summer of 2019, the retired admiral was photographed at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium with Tyrone Taborn, chairman of the BEYA STEM Conference. (photo inset).
The National Science Board (NSB) presented Eugene DeLoatch and Tyrone Taborn the 2019 NSB Public Service Award. The award honors exemplary service in promoting public understanding of science and engineering.
Also at the 2019 NSB event was Tony Watson, a former chair of the BEYA Alumni group and one of the "Centennial Seven" African-American sailors, who served as commanding officers of United States submarines in the 20th century.
