The valor of soldiers, including Private First Class Justin R. Davis, was highlighted in the Memorial Day Concert. Davis, a graduate of Magruder High School in Rockville, Maryland, passed away on June 25, 2006, at the age of nineteen while on patrol during combat in Afghanistan. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on July 6, 2006.
Davis was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.
Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) recognized the sacrifices of the men and women of the Armed Forces on Memorial Day 2018, including those of Specialist Tocarra Green, the first woman from Maryland to die in the Iraq War, and Sergeant Erick M. Houck, who died in Afghanistan the previous year.
Memorial Day began as Decoration Day, where families and communities decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flags and flowers, a tradition that continues today.
