Renata Spinks, the 2020 Stars and Stripes Senior Executive Service (SES) Member of the Year, was recently promoted Assistant Director of Information Technology/Deputy Chief Information Officer and Senior Information Security Officer for the U.S. Marine Corps. Last February she was a cybersecurity speaker at the BEYA STEM Conference.

Ms. Spinks has served as an acting chief information security officer at the Marine Corps and senior information security officer and cyber technology officer. She has led an extensive portfolio focused on information technology, policy, investments, cyber operations (defensive and offensive) as well as organizational leadership for the Marine Corps network and information enterprise.

Early in her career, Ms. Spinks served in the US Army 44th Medical Brigade and 28th Combat Support Hospital. She is a decorated combat veteran and later embarked on a federal career in the Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Office of Acquisition.

There, she developed a love for cybersecurity after serving in a supporting role to intelligence and law enforcement specializing in human behavior analysis for human trafficking and child exploitation investigations. After more than four years she joined the Department of Treasury and Millennium Challenge Corporation as a special assistant to the director. Ms. Spinks moved to the Internal Revenue Service as an executive in 2016. No stranger to using technology to revolutionize institutions, she has also run nonprofit organizations as a managing director of Rising Footsteps and CEO of CyberFi Industries.

Ms. Spinks holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems, a master’s degree in technology management, and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Cybersecurity at Capitol Technology University.
